Understanding History

Understanding History was written primarily for the student of history to show how the historian works and how history is written; but Louis Gottschalk, Preofessor of History at the University of Chicago, has also given the layman an illuminating guide to intelligent reading of our recorded past. One part of this volume shows in detail how to collect materials, evaluate them, and fashion them into a fluent historical narrative. Most of the book, however, looks at history in more general terms. The three dimensions of history are discussed, and the reader will gain a great perspective on the idea of history from this book.
