In this book Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965), the great 20th century humanitarian, begins with an analysis of the true causes of World War I and the collapse of European civilization in the early twentieth century. He then presents his solution for how to build a sustainable and just civilization. In a wide-ranging discussion that draws from Schweitzer's philosophical and religious studies, he describes the path that led him to the ethical mysticism of Reverence for Life and how it can provide the foundation for true civilization. First published in 1923, Schweitzer's solution was rejected and largely forgotten by a world that followed a different path, although some few people around the world continue to hope for a renewal of interest.
