Nobel prize winning scientist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi describes his life history and the course of his scientific career in this autobiographical article. His very readable story is as rich in human experience as it is in scientific discovery. Born the son of a wealthy Hungarian landowner, Szent-Gyorgyi’s life took a turn for the adventurous when he enlisted as a soldier in World War I and aided Hungary and the Allies by completing spy missions against Germany during World War II. He received his PhD for isolating ascorbic acid, and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937 for his work with Vitamin C.
