Kittel was the son of the professor of Old Testament Rudolf Kittel . He visited in Leipzig King Albert Grammar School and studied at the University 1907-1912 theology and oriental languages. Further study locations were Tübingen, Berlin and Halle. In 1913 he received his doctorate and became a professor in Kiel. In the First World War served as coat Navy chaplain , 1917, he became a lecturer in Leipzig and led the church religion teacher training college until 1921 he became an associate professor. He was in the same year as full professor of New Testament to Greifswald called and took the 1926 Chair Adolf Schlatter in Tübingen . Here he published studies and articles on religion and historical comparative research on the ancient Judaism and early Christianity Palestine . With the rise of the Nazis in May 1933, he joined the Nazi party , and was sitting in the University Führerrat. With the 1933 essay published The Jewish question, he participated in the Nazi policy of exclusion of the Jewish population, and learned about Jewish ( Martin Buber ) and Christians ( Ernst Lohmeyer ) contradiction.
