Description

This history covers a span of one hundred years time. The settlement of Loyalton was the dream of Benjamin F. Bowman from Royalton, Vermont. He began work on starting a colony to settle in Dakota Territory. He started organizing the colony in 1883. The Colony was proposed, organized and named in Vermont. Loyalton, Dakota Territory was growing steadily in 1885. It appears that Loyalton was later called Vermont City. Hardships caused many people to leave and the population dwindled. The coming of the railroad changed the town to a different location. The name was changed back to Loyalton. In 1889 Dakota Territory was divided into two states and therefore it became Loyalton, South Dakota. One hundred years of history ends with the Loyalton Reunion June 30, 1983. Contents include: Memories, History, Churches, Military History, Organizations, Family Histories, Schools, Recollections, Charles Osgood: Newsbreak, Advertisements.
