From the author: This paper presents a state space based multi-input multi-output model for a direct expansion air-conditioning system. The dynamic behavior of both refrigeration and air circuits was taken into account in this model, and the condensation of moisture in air was considered in the model to obtain a better representation of an actual system. The model can serve as a platform for designing and implementing different modern control strategies. A performance evaluation function in the form of internal variables was also designed and computed for ON-OFF control. Experimental validation was done on an air-conditioning system with ON-OFF control on an Indian Railway passenger coach. The transient and steady-state responses for dry-bulb temperature and specific humidity of inside air were obtained from the model and an experiment. These were compared and found to be in good agreement.
