Alain-René Lesage (May 8, 1668, Sarzeau-November 17, 1747, Boulogne), also spelled Le Sage was a French novelist and playwright born at Sarzeau, in the peninsula of Rhuys, between the Morbihan and the sea, Brittany. Gil Blas (French: L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane) is a picaresque novel by Lesage from 1715 to 1735. It is considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre.
