From the author: Sensors based on polymer optical fiber (POF) attract more and more interest because of the perfect combination of performance (bandwidth, electromagnetic immunity, flexibility) and easy of handling (simple cut with razor blade, extreme ruggedness). Mostly POF are highly multimode fibers and thus, interference based sensors requiring single mode fibers are not feasible. Nevertheless a large variety of sensor applications is still open from chemical sensors via liquid level sensors to deformation sensors. After giving that overview we will describe in more detail recent results from some of our sensor projects.
