Amanda was born of English parents but was raised in China, where her father was studying the people there. Upon her father's death, her mother having died some years earlier, Amanda goes to England to live with her half brother until he can find her an acceptable marriage.
That scenario is fine with Amanda, but the disappearance of her father's secretary, a man who just about raised Amanda, brings her determination to find the man and rescue him if necessary.
