Colonel Herbert Zheng is annoyed at the Central Government’s insistence that its citizens need to be protected from certain ‘inconvenient truths’. Even more disheartening to Zheng is the fact most of his students at the Academy would agree. His biggest challenge to date has been to uncover the full truth about the failed invasion of his home planet, Terra Nova, by humans from Earth that became known as Chamberlain’s Folly.
One afternoon, a package containing an obsolete computer and some memory cards arrives for Zheng from the shipyards where ancient battleships are sent to be studied by the Bureau of Historical Sciences. The contents give Zheng his first concrete evidence that the official account of Chamberlain’s Folly is at best, a misrepresentation of the facts, or even worse, a fallacy perpetuated by the Central Government for reasons unknown. Before Zheng can get his head around the implications, he finds that the stakes are much higher than he could have imagined.
The Terra Nova Chronicles: Book One - Chamberlain’s Folly is an engaging and sometimes humorous introduction into a reality that is futuristic but familiar. It is clever character-driven science fiction that looks at government secrecy, conspiracy theories, gunboat diplomacy and veterans’ affairs, among other timely topics, from the perspective of individuals who find themselves intimately involved; often without choice.
