The main themes of this book are the two civilizations, Aztec and Inca, that were flourishing in America when Europeans arrived, and the confrontation between each of them and the Spanish conquistadors. But this brief period is set in a far wider context. The story begins some 30,000 years ago when humans first made their way into America. There then follow brief sketches of the many early civilizations created by descendants of those first Americans, in central America and west of the Andes. The last, and longest-lasting of these was that of the Maya, whose great ceremonial centres have been uncovered in the past two centuries from the encroaching jungle.
