HPC Cloud Computing Developments: HPC User Forum, April 2011, Houston, Texas

This IDC update is a near-verbatim summary of the panel discussion on "HPC Cloud Computing Developments," along with a separate cloud computing presentation, at the High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum meeting at the Omni Galleria Hotel in Houston, Texas, April 5–7, 2011. The principal theme of the meeting was "Using HPC to Drive Economic and Scientific Competitiveness." Other tasks and topics of the meeting included:

• Share information among HPC users, vendors, and IDC for improving the health of the HPC industry
• Explore data-intensive computing in healthcare, medicine, and the life sciences
• Review plans for petascale and exascale HPC systems
• Hear updates on the teams participating in DARPA's UHPC program
• Further explore application scalability and high productivity computing
• Evaluate the use of alternative processors, heterogeneous multicores, and GPGPUs in HPC
• Provide updates on HPC in the aerospace industry and industry outreach programs
• Provide updates on key HPC programs in the government sector
• Present technical updates from HPC hardware, software, and storage vendors
• Offer IDC's latest HPC market update and forecast data
