Description
Mishima Yukio (1925-1970) is famous for his spectacular suicide by seppuku, ritual disembowelment. Seppuku was featured prominently in his short story Yukoku (Patriotism, 1966), which ends in a double suicide. In the film version, Mishima played the lieutenant, and got to "perform" seppuku on film. What if Mishima had written another story with one important difference in the double suicide: a lover's suicide between two men? That is the theory behind Ai no shokei (The Execution of Love), written around the same time, circulated like a samizdat, and published in Barazoku, Japan's oldest gay magazine, in 1973. This is the first time to appear in English translation.
