Description

The main account of this collection and also the book's title, is a true memoir of the experiences of Kenneth Margo, a South African ANC under cover operative from the mid 1980s to 1990. It is his first hand tale of how he, a minor player came to be disillusioned with what he saw of the conduct of some of those who led the 'struggle' in exile and who later became prominent in the ANC governments. Its setting ranges from Zimbabwe to South Africa and The German Democratic Republic, and includes a detailed account of his experience receiving Intelligence training at the hands of the notorious STASSI in the weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the communist regime there in 1989. It is a tale written with detachment and humour.
It is followed by a stream of consciousness' account ironically called The Mission (p34), detailing an undercover task he undertook in 1988.
The other two accounts, Waiting for Machel (p46) and Meeting Mandela (p49) relate his first hand encounters with Nelson Mandela and Samora Machel ,in which he observes with a detachment tinged with sadness what he perceived on those occasions might have been the priorities of these two famous liberation heroes.
