We first visited Burma, as it was known then, in 1988. A group tour that had five days of discomfort, terrible food, a repressive government but, fortunately, a wonderful group of people to travel with who rolled with the punches. Why have we returned to Burma (now known as Myanmar) three times since that inauspicious beginning? Because tourism is still relatively undeveloped. You have a chance to experience South Asia the way it once was, although extremely basic in remote areas. Unfortunately, the repressive government remains but don’t let that stop you!

Eighteen years later, Myanmar has delicious food, wonderful hotel accommodations (in Yangon, Pagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake), and new areas are constantly being opened to tourists. You’ll meet the sweetest, most gracious, hospitable people who need tourism badly. Starved for outside contact, we have a chance to make a positive impact on their lives. THAT is why we keep returning and hope you too seize the opportunity to visit this picturesque and still unspoiled country.
