Telomeres, Telomerase, and TA-65

Can a cell possibly live forever? Many of us know that cells die, but most of us cannot explain precisely how that process occurs. There are a lot of technicalities involved with the life cycle of cells, and one of the steps that can allow you to actually watch as the cell grows old and dies is "apoptosis." This is something that involves "telomeres" and these are the basic subjects of this book.

Why should it matter if a cell dies? After all...the body just makes new cells...right? The answer is both yes and no. The body does replenish some cells, but there are also many that age and eventually die; never to be replaced. This means that almost everyone might benefit from a technology that allows cells to live indefinitely!

In subsequent chapters, we are going to explore telomeres and telomerase. We will consider the various activities that they perform and we will look at two areas of modern science in which it is believed they can be applied: cancer and aging.

The subtitle of this work is "Discovering the 'Immortal Cell'" and many scientists firmly believe that telomerase is going to be the key to providing human cells with what they need in order to overcome cellular death. Intriguing and exciting, but just a new science. You will see that there are many active studies about the use of telomerase in order to combat "senescence" or cellular aging. You will also see that scientists believe that they might be able to tell telomerase to "shut down" in malignant cancer cells, and that this might be the way to get rampant cancers under control and even vanquished.
