Dream Her Back is a collection of two novellas about fantastical break-ups in Pittsburg, Kansas. Pittsburg is a small town in Southeast Kansas, near the borders of Missouri, Oklahoma and not that far from Arkansas.
The first novella, The Flying Saucer Philosopher, is about one of those high school couples that hug each other the until the bell rings to go back to class from Lunch. The girl's name is Marigold and the boy, Grover, tells their story, pinning their break-up on one night. The time his best friend, Marlo, showed his girlfriend that he has the power to transform his body into a real deal flying saucer.
The second novella, Casa Del Queso: Home for Wayward Husbands, is about a college group-house near Pittsburg State University. There's the guys that live there, the girlfriends that live there and the whole society of struggling twenty-somethings who make the Casa their place to get drunk and watch. One night, a former housemate comes over looking for his wife and becomes so consumed by grief over their waning relationship that water begins to pour from his face and won't stop. It makes a small river, running down the driveway. Luckily, Darrah, their dynamic lesbian friend, has just been fired, returned to Pittsburg and has time to take the case.
