In this article, eye-witness accounts from 1521 by Spanish chroniclers cite evidence of Christian symbolism and traditions in the indigenous traditions and artifacts that they encountered. According to Native accounts, the teachers of monotheism preceded the arrival of the Spaniards by at least 1400 years.
Franciscan friars were puzzled by Christian religious practices embedded in the procedures and observations of indigenous religious prrocedures. According to resident spiritual authorities, the Friars brought nothing new.
The Native population was very pious and observed their own version of the Ten Commandments. Only they were able to cover the details in eight.
