Description
Bootle, Merseyside, 1939, and war is imminent. This will be a new type of conflict, with civilians, including children, in the front line.
The Montague family, Jim, Jane, and their four children, are about to live through monmentous and dangerous times.
Jim is a merchant seaman and he will have to face marauding U-boats and surface raiders.
Bill, the youngest son, aged eight, is to be evacuated: 'I don't want to go, Mum, I don't want to go,' he pleads.
Mike, the eldest son, is in the air force and he and his friend, Aubrey, are destined to become part of 'the few' in the Battle of Britain: 'They were woken at four thirty am and forty minutes later were at readiness in the dispersal hut, Mae Wests on, trying to relax as they awaited the call that would send them running towards their aircraft'.
Jane joins the WVS. Emily, Mike's twin, and Paul, the second son, join the ARP. All three are to experience the horrors of the blitz.
Emily still holds a torch for her ex-boy friend, Sidney, and is very worried about him. He enlists in the army, is sent to France, and becomes one of the thousands trying to escape through Dunkirk: 'They didn't need to be told that they had arrived. A red glow lit up the sky; a black pall of smoke hung in the air; the rattle of sporadic gunfire beat against their eardrums'.
This is the story of the lives and loves of the family and their friends as the first years of the war unfold.
