Description

The electric furnace gives us a new atmosphere, in which steel-making can be accomplished. Purification of miscellaneous qualities of steel containing noxious substances can be controlled with great exactitude. Scientific synthesis of complex steels by the addition of many valuable elements to pure metallic iron under accurate chemical control has replaced the old methods which are sometimes suggestive of the mysterious practices of the alchemists. The melting of steel in a truly reducing atmosphere is only possible with electric heat, and, consequently, new phenomena are observed and often striking results obtained. Some of these we understand, or suppose we do, but others must be the subject of further research. The electric furnace has given us at reasonable prices new materials of special value to the steel-maker, such as low carbon ferro-chrome and high grade ferro-silicon, which, in turn, have been economically made into such products as stainless steel and transformer iron. The former product is being used by engineers for remarkable new applications, and the latter has increased the efficiency of electric transformers to an extent which represents, an annual saving of hundreds of thousands of tons of coal per annum.
