Description
To give a popular description of the marvellous natural phenomena of boiling hot wells and rivers, mud and lakes, steam-holes, and numerous valuable medicinal springs and baths of hot and cold water and hot mud in the neighbourhood of A uckland, is the object of the present work. Our first edition was imperfect, it being then almost impossible for a European, in the troubled state the natives were in, to visit and examine carefully the Hot Lake District. The Government have now acquired, by purchase, some of the most important blocks of land, including several hot lakes and medicinal springs, and are negotiating for the purchase of the whole Lake District, to be reserved and set apart as a great national park for the colony. The old Maoris cling tenaciously to their gardens, villages, and the sacred burial grounds of their ancestors ;and although these are to be reserved for their exclusive use, they dread the influx of the pale-face (P akeha), who has little respect or sympathy for the associations connected with their family lands.
