The endeavour has been to give such matter alone as may be interesting for the public to know of Andrew Crosse, than whom few so deserving were so unknown. His fame would have been wider, had he been poor, ambitious, or wise in worldly wisdom. He was none of these things. For myself I claim some indulgence at the hands of criticism, inasmuch as memory and affection, rather than confidence in my own powers, have supported me through the prosecution of the task.
