Description

When our anger gets out of control we become aware of the very real damage this explosive energy can cause in our lives and are often at a loss on how to deal with anger. Many anger management techniques focus on diffusing anger or putting structures in place to mitigate anger issues and while these certainly are valid methods, the method in this book is far more open ended and organic and leans more towards addressing the root causes of our anger - working with anger in such a way as to facilitate both healing and positive life changes.

One of the great things about the eight step technique outlined in the book is that it affords us the opportunity to work with the true source of our anger while mitigating the damage to our life and the people around us. Not only is the technique extremely valuable in dealing with anger but the author offers some incredible and challenging insights – insights that examine some of our social beliefs and show us how these deeply held beliefs make us feel like a victim rather than an empowered individual.

With these deeply held social beliefs it's no wonder that we often feel angry! Of course, all of this with a solid dose of brutal honesty – he admits to not supposing any kind of “absolute truth” with regard to many of the ideas he presents but one is forced to see clearly how one’s beliefs and society’s beliefs at large impact us negatively.

The book is written very much in the conversational tone of the author – one feels as if one is present in one of his workshops or one of his private sessions – in which he has more than 25+ years of experience and was dubbed by one of his colleagues as a “Lifesmith”. Nevill’s experience shines through and he doesn’t dilly dally with his conversational tone – his ideas are concisely summarised and to the point and leaves us to examine these often controversial ideas in our own way. “Wrestle with it” he says and leaves us with the idea that it is perhaps in the “wrestling” that the value lies.

The author also examines how anger manifests in our relationships and notes that we often get angry with those closest to us. He offers some very useful insights into why this is and how we can use our anger in our relationships as a tool to heal the “sore spots” of our psyches. Moreover he offers some ideas on supporting other people with their anger issues too. Perhaps it is only those of us who have engaged with this idea, who have begun to understand the true source of our own anger that can overcome our knee-jerk reaction to the anger of others and offer them our support in turn (and perhaps also healing ourselves in the process). So even if you don’t suffer from any apparently “abnormal” anger issues this book is a real eye-opener and a must read!
