Description

Notes are intended to furnish aS tudent with information amply sufficient to enable him to pass the Honours Examination of theS cience and Art Department, so far as a knowledge of Building Materials is concerned. They have, however, been extended somewhat beyond what is actually necessary for this purpose by the addition ofT ables and information of a practical nature, which it is hoped may be useful to young Engineers, A rchitects, and others engaged in the design and erection of structures of different kinds. It was considered that a work upon materials, written merely to meet the requirements of students in theS econd Stage of theS cience Examinations, would be unsatisfactory. Such a work would contain very elementary information on the subject. It would be so condensed that it would not give a fair idea of the great differences which exist in the characteristics and qualities of even ordinary building materials; and being thus narrowly restricted, it would tend to encourage the pernicious practice of cramming. In order to keep the bulk of the work within reasonable bounds, it has been necessary strictly to limit the scope of theN otes. It will be well, therefore, to state exactly what they are meant to contain and what is purposely excluded.
