Preface to First Edition. As there has been no legislation upon clubs, the law in relation to them is purely case made, and is only to be gathered from the records of legal decisions scattered throughout the various reports, ancient, modern, and recent. Consequently, practitioners in both branches of the legal profession experience much inconvenience from having to gather the information they require from a great number of cases, not always of certain authority. This is an attempt to obviate such inconvenience, and to suj)ply a want which I believe to be common, and which I myself have creatly felt at times. D. D. Nottingham, May 4th, 1889.
