Description

The first edition of this essay was published in 1866, and was purely clinical. Although deeply interested in the discussion then going on respecting the intimate nature and origin of Tubercle and of Pulmonary Consumption, I thought it best to confine myself entirely to the clinical aspect of the disease. I merely described therefore the hygienic or sthenic treatment, which gives such infinitely more favourable results than those obtainable by the antiphlogistic treatment generally adopted in my younger days. Such reticence, however, is no longer desirable or possible. Two doctrines are in presence, both based on minute histological research, and both exercising all over the world, a profound influence on the treatment of Pulmonary Phthisis. The one that of Virchow and his followers all but denies the tubercular origin of chronic Pulmonary Consumption of the disease clinically recognised as Pulmonary Phthisis; in their eyes it is either a new growth or a mere form of chronic pneumonia.
