Description
My plan in working up this bibliography may be expressed as follows :B efore 1879, Yof the publication of The Egoist, which marked the turn of the tide, I have endeavoured to collect all published writing either by or about Mr Meredith, except anonymous editorial work. After 1879, while I have still aimed at a complete list of his own writings, I have selected, from the countless criticisms and appreciations which a tardy recognition has produced, only those which were written by well-known men, or which seemed to me intrinsically important. This bibliography is divided into three sections :I. Mr Meredith sown writings. These are arranged chronologically, contributions to periodicals, etc., being enumerated first, and volume publications immediately afterwards. Later editions of volumes and reviews will be found under the year of the first edition which appeared in volume form, except in the case of the short stories and the Essay on Comedy, which were not produced as volumes until nearly twenty years afterwards, and are placed under 1877, the year of their first appearance. II. A chronological list of articles (not being reviews of particular books) and other writings of importance, relating to MrM eredith. III. A synoptic table of the poems, arranged alphabetically and in perpendicular columns, representing the different editions, so that all the places of appearance of any poem may be seen at a glance. Personalia of every sort have been rigidly excluded.
