Description

The evacuation of Crete, May 1941. Chaos is turned into good fortune when groups of British and Commonwealth troops retire South of the island to be evacuated by the Royal Navy. During the trek South, a group of British troops encounter three Australians who joined them. Nearing their destination, they meet two Cretans and a small boy. Under attack from the air, a Cretan is killed. The group leave the scene and continue to the evacuation area to board the ship.

The Australian Sergeant is given an army message which after reading he throws to the ground then disappears into the darkness, silently refusing to be evacuated. Immediately, a monk emerges from the darkness, and stooping low, picks up the message and he too vanishes into the night.

Captain Geives, a British Officer, witnesses the scene and, determined to know the reason for the Sergeant’s action, endeavours to discover the contents of the message and the fate of Sergeant Hammond. "Endeavour" is an important word; it can mean victory or disaster.

First-hand narration reveals an intriguing plot with startling authenticity.
