Description

Interior design pros have kept their ideas to themselves… until now. Author Claire Harlin consolidates the best practices of designers from New York to San Diego to understand why we feel the need to decorate and design, and how to fulfill that need with our own personal touches. Through reflection on what your space will say about you and discovery of resources that will help say it, Harlin and her expert sources take a bottom-up approach to personalized environments. “Decorating Secrets Every Design Diva Should Know” examines color palettes and room aesthetic as it visits each essential space in a home — from the “feel good” bedroom to the oft-made over kitchen. Readers will learn to employ subtle strokes, bold expressions or nuanced combinations of each to turn the best kept secrets into a well kept home.

Interview with the Author

101 Publishing: Why did you to choose to write about this topic?

Claire Harlin: I see art in everything, and I feel that bringing creativity and visual appeal to one's personal space is important. Not only am I a longtime lover of interior design, do-it-yourself projects and style in any shape or form, but I like to help people enhance their own lives in any way I can. You don't have to be a professional designer to make your home look awesome, so I wanted to give each reader the advice and ideas necessary to take ownership of their space and style it to fit their lifestyle and personality. More importantly, I wanted to inspire my readers' imaginations, as well as those who step into their well-decorated spaces.

101 Publishing: How did writing this ebook impact your own life?

Claire Harlin: I happened to be moving into a new home and decorating it at the time I was doing research and conducting interviews for this book, so I not only had a big decorating task to accomplish myself, but I was able to relate to each and every one of my future readers. The process sparked so many great ideas, and if I may say so myself, I am absolutely loving my space.

Excerpt from the Book:

“Just because TV show designers often like to transform a living space in 24 hours or less, doesn't mean you have to, too. If you just moved, live in your space for a while and feel it out before you make major changes. It takes time to get used to the natural light, balance and purpose of a room. You also have to be honest with yourself about what decorative elements will fit with your lifestyle.”

About the Author:

Claire Harlin is an editor for four newspapers that serve some of San Diego's most beautiful coastal communities. In her spare time, she writes freelance — with cat in lap — for various websites and magazines, covering topics ranging from travel and pets to home decor. Claire betrayed her native Oklahoma when she attended journalism school at the University of Texas at Austin, but she doesn't regret it one bit. Her journalistic adventures include serving as editor-in-chief of her university's daily student newspaper and traveling to Mexico City to cover a heated presidential election rally. She's been interviewed about her views and experiences on CNN and in Editor & Publisher magazine, but she had the most fun writing trivia questions to earn a living right out of college.
