"Son,

I can hardly believe you are already 18 years old. The time has passed by so quickly, and it seems only a few short years ago that your mother and I were watching you take your first steps. But this is a time to be looking forwards, not backwards. The reason I'm writing this letter is to give you some insights into what you can expect from the world.

As you read this, your first reaction might be skepticism. This is natural enough, and even a good thing up to a point. The world is a very different place now than it was when I was your age. Yet, believe it or not, many of the most important things are still the same.

First of all, be honest with everyone -most of all yourself. It's important to set goals, but they have to be ones that will make you happy. You can get advice from others, but in the end you must figure out what is going to bring you the most fulfillment.

When you have decided upon a goal, don't look for shortcuts. Anything worth achieving takes a certain amount of time and effort. Looking back, one thing I remember is that I felt the most pride and satisfaction over those accomplishments that I had to work for.
