Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are called upon to investigate two aerial mysteries. One is that of a balloonist, who after a successful flight with plenty of oxygen available, returns dead. His body appearance is normal, without a mark on it. The other mystery is the crash on launching of Professor Samuel Langley's steam powered manned Aerodrome aircraft.. The Aerodrome's design is perfect, and yet on launching it immediately crashed. Careful examination of the wreckage reveals nothing amiss. According to all aeronautical principles the aircraft should have flown, but it did not.

In reward for his services Professor Langley gives Holmes a sizable honorarium, and makes him an honorary aviator, with a plaque and aviator's cap and goggles. Holmes is amused, and says he likes the idea of being an aviator.
