A lazy New Year lunch develops into a discussion of why the people of the world are so complacent about the many issues that should excite controversy and action, things like global warming and the profligate use, almost to exhaustion, of the world’s limited resources. Pete, a young industrialist, has developed a new class of military helmet with some special qualities. He offers it to his friends to look at, and Ariadne puts it on her head. To her surprise, she finds that her thinking processes are relieved of much of the static that people have come to accept as normal – her thinking is clear again, as it used to be.
The friends agree to report the phenomenon to the Special Branch of the Police, but Joseph, who does this, is arrested on a charge of treason, for possession of State secrets. The friends are plunged into a nightmare of confusion and threat, fighting the people who should be on their side, as they struggle to overcome the threat to their livelihood and their lives.
