To the Fourth Generation

Growing up fatherless in a hardscrabble ghetto tucked into a small corner of Laredo, Texas, Guillermo Corrasco y Martinez must find a way to provide for himself, his siblings, and his ailing young mother. His selfish loser father returns only once a year or so, and then only to abuse his wife and beat his children in an alcoholic rage.

With strong resolve, Guillermo overcomes the loss of his mother to her illness and all his siblings as his father kidnaps them to Mexico. Virtually on his own, Guillermo becomes an athletic champion, a hugely successful realtor, and the owner of a grand casino. His sole delight besides his business is his family.

Sooner than he realizes, Guillermo is a great-grandfather, and his little granddaughter becomes the absolute delight and total focus of his life. He retires and abandons every pursuit to be with her as much as possible. Yet this fourth-generation child develops a life-threatening illness that brings Guillermo the most severe test he has ever faced: who is in charge here? Who makes the rules?
