Drinking and Drugging, Disease my Ass

I spent forty years of my life in bars and hell holes drinking and drugging. At the age of fifty six I finally came to the realization that I was wasting my life away. I was sick, hungover and broke and decided for the five hundreth time to quit drinking, drugging and womanizing. For some unknown reason this time it took and I did quit. I am now in my sixteenth year of sobriety and I decided to write about my experiences leading up to my stopping and staying stopped from alcohol and drugs. I felt that I must convey my experiences in futile attempts at sobriety and just convey how I did finally make it. In my thoughts I knew that I had to tell all of my fellow drunks and druggies of the myth of alcoholism and drug addiction being diseases. I began to realize this myth in my second year of sobriety and I felt that my quest for sobriety became easier for me after the realization that there was no disease with which I had to contend. AA, spirituality, and my willpower helped get me straight and most importantly they kept me straight. This is my story.
