Fred and Edna Appelby have finally decided to take their cruise of a lifetime, to the Panama Canal. Despite several problems, they have headed out to sea and are having a great time on various ship excursions. A last minute shopping trip, and several rounds of margaritas, in Columbia causes Fred and a couple other passengers to miss their ship's sailing and be duped by drug runners to board a boat for a ride to catch their ship. Their misadventures over the next few days involve being chased by modern day pirates, a narrow escape from thugs in a Mexican fishing village and sailing through a hurricaine. Edna frantically musters the assistance of security services and the help of an unlikely hero from the ship. The story culminates in a search and rescue effort by the U.S. Coast Guard ship and aviation assets in the Gulf of Mexico.
