Rita Beckham has emerged from a childhood of abuse by her father, mother and brother and the mocking discrimination of her schoolmates to become a successful and respected business woman. Though she is in love with Jerry, their on-again, off-again relationship is impeded by the prejudices of the high society of which Jerry is part. Her frustration and hopelessness drive her to some actions she will later regret. Eventually her business success bridges that social chasm between her and Jerry's family and they marry.Her father has died in prison,and her insanely envious brother is married and employed, and though still an annoying problem, Rita feels secure and is content in her new life.
