"We were just beyond "Indian John" rest area at the western fringe of the great Eastern Washington desert, when the morning’s low-fat latte, bran muffin and roadside Bing cherries kicked in with a diuretic vengeance. It was somewhere between there and “Mel’s Hole” that life, as I once knew it, began slowly slipping away like a levitating Sasquatch in the white-hot beam of a hovering UFO.
