The most infamous Hanamachi (Geisha towns) can be found in Kyoto and Tokyo. In Tokyo the areas Asakusa and Kagurazaka are well known Geisha districts.Today in Kyoto, the ‘Geiko’, as the Geisha are known there, entertain in traditional tea-houses. ‘Hanamachi’ or ‘kagai’ are the traditional Japanese names for Geisha districts. In Kyoto there are five of these districts. There are usually ‘ochaya’ in these areas. In the ochaya customers are entertained by Geishas. There are also rooms available for rent. These areas are laid out like banquet-style houses.
There are also well –known Geisha areas located in Atami City and Nigata city.
The “Enseki’ (banquet), where the Geisha entertains is usually a luxurious and merry affair. The guest is usually known as ‘Dan-na-sama’, also master. Formally the ‘Houkan’ (the male Geisha), known now as the Taikomochi present elegant entertainment to the guests through erotic story-telling. The ‘otokoshi’ are the men who help the guests wear their kimono and assist in their formal needs.
