This issue features three very different children in three very different situations. A young boy has to grow up fast in Micah Hyatt’s “Magic Marker,” but what he grows into remains ambiguous. In “Shadows,” Andrea Bradley shows us that a little girl’s kindness and cruelty are grafted together, and need only be flipped as easily as a coin. Beyond that, Ben Sunde takes us on an imaginative journey as a little girl who refuses to go home encounters a twisted “Store Policy.”

IF09 also features the finale of “Clockwork Revenge,” where hapless Simon completes his trial by patience, and squares off against bad odds and worse enemies. After that, Martin Zeigler treats us to “Endsville, Pop. 2,” a tricksy nineteenth century genre mash up that will give you a gambling itch.

On a separate note, issue nine begins the second year of Isotropic Fiction. We have spent the last eight issues gathering great tales from all directions, adding features like novel excerpts and author interviews, and refining our process.
