In this book we shall examine error control techniques from the point of view of the user; that is, the individual who wishes to cope with errors in a specific instance of data transmission or data storage. In most cases, results will be presented without proof or derivation. However, there will usually be a discussion of why the result is useful and or significant. Wherever it seems helpful to do so plausibility arguments will be given. Examples will be introduced at many points along the way as illustrations of the theory. In fact, the same example may be brought through several stages by being utilized in conjunction with several different points of theory. A person who is considering the use of error control should aks the following questions: 1. How much improvement in performance is possible with error control? 2. How easily and at what cost can error control be implemented? 3. Is error control alone the best solution to a problem or should it be supplememnted (or even replaced) by another techniques?
