Description
Unlike previous books in the series (Discourse and its Disguises and Self-Assertion and Brokerage) which focused on analytical themes cutting across territorial boundaries, the present volume limits itself to one country, The Gambia. As much by chance as by design, the Centre of West African Studies has, over the years, built up an unusual expertise on The Gambia. Three members of staff and at least six graduate students have conducted research in several disciplines and on a wide range of topics to do with the Gambia. Out of this common interest, in what has to be the recognised as the most accessible and accommodating of African countries to academic research, emerged a desire to take stock of this work by means of a small roundtable meeting of Gambian specialists and to bring it to the attention of the wider academic community through the publication of its proceedings.
