Description
Following a steady decline in his life that includes losing his job, his wife, his house, and eventually his sanity, Scott Mendel opts for the easy way out and commits suicide in broad daylight, leaping in front of a bus on Broadway in downtown San Diego.
After he blacks out, he finds himself gliding through a long tunnel, where long lost family members beckon at the end of it…
Eventually, Scott discovers that the family members are not there by chance, but form panels that help run their descendants from Star Mendel 4, or one of billions of stars in the galaxy designed to ensure human survival on earth. It soon becomes clear just how much he had underestimated the power of genetics.
Entrusted to lead the family group running his daughter, Scott quickly realizes there are alternate forces at work within the panel with conflicting interests. He eventually concludes that running his daughter becomes more of a chore on Star Mendel 4 than it ever was on earth.
When a rogue family member finally threatens to destroy the remainder of the Mendels on Earth, Scott must step up and act wisely… or witness the downfall of an entire family line, not to mention Star Mendel 4 itself.
Along the way, Scott interacts in the afterlife with such former luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Jim Morrison, General Patton, and Henry VIII, among others.
Using dark humor in a most surreal fashion, The Absolute Beginner’s Handbook to Life after Death depicts both San Diego, California and outer space in their full glamour while bearing testimony to family bonds… and just how strong they really are, even after death.
