It was supposed to be simple.

Travel to an isolated pre-Victorian planet and investigate the status of an inoperative jump gate and missing AI.

The team is under the direction of Gwyneth Cargill, the woman who murdered Remnant before he saved her life. As the M'el of Family Cargill, she represents the pinnacle of Family genetics. Ruled by her DNA and bred to physical perfection, she is accustomed to wealth, status, and privilege. As one of the few Inquisitors, she also is an enforcer of the Covenants, a skilled warrior, and one of the most powerful women in the Commonwealth.

Remnant could not be more her opposite. He has neither family nor pedigree. Infected with a fatal retrovirus, his body's DNA is unstable, continuously being rewritten to conform to an unknown template. A man of few possessions, even his memory has been taken from him. For all that, he has flashes of hidden talent--secret abilities which, if fully known, would make him even more an outcast.

Simmering hostilities between Remnant and Gwyneth erupt into open conflict just as they exit fold-space and confront a hostile planet already launching an attack against them. Too late, the pair realizes how desperate the Syndic is to prevent the Commonwealth from learning of its oppressive exploitation of the planet's population.

Marooned and hunted, both Remnant and Gwyneth must accept their differences to survive. But trust does not come easily.
