Description

ARDF (Amateur Radio Direction Finding), sometimes called Radio Orienteering, is an international sport combining radio direction finding with orienteering (map and compass navigation.) The object is to find up to five transmitters in the shortest amount of time to beat out other competitors.

People new to radio direction finding are often overwhelmed and frustrated by not being given the information and training they need to succeed at locating the transmitters. And too frequently, they do not return after trying it.

Not a particularly good way to attract and keep people interested.

This short guide was written to provide an overview and some easy to understand techniques for finding transmitters on the 2 meter ham band. There is a minimum of “jargon” used and no theory, thus making this an ideal how-to book for beginners.

It combines almost 20 years of experience going from a rank beginner, to being a member of the US ARDF Team, to having been an International Jury member at four World ARDF Championships, and putting on three US ARDF Championships along with numerous training sessions.

And while my emphasis is on ARDF, these concepts absolutely apply equally to any 2 meter transmitter hunt or Foxhunt as they are sometimes called.

So while you won’t be able to put on a hunt without an amateur radio license, there is nothing to stop you from participating in this fun activity!
