Description
Written by one of the best evaluators of top end talent in the world, Art of Motion is a comprehensive study of body balance as it relates to athletic performance. It starts somewhat technical but once the author lays the groundwork of knowledge necessary this book really takes off.
Particularly interesting is the pictures section of the book. The greatest athletes in the history of sport are here. Montana, Bird, Lemieux, Orr, Gretzky as a child, an in depth look at their movements from video footage. Timing, centripetal acceleration, momentum of your body weight as a power source, and how the states of balance and imbalance determine what you see on the playing surface are all discussed in a way that is beautifully illustrated. The author makes his words come alive when he combines his insight with series of still video captures. The mystery surrounding these great athletes is uncovered and the physical basis of their exploits is shown. It is truly an amazing work.
Art of Motion contains 39 photographs, 17 drawings and 24 quotes from professional athletes, their family and friends, coaches and sports management personnel. There is also a chapter on spinal balance which focuses on the upper cervical work of former international chiropractor of the year Dr. Marshall Dickholtz Sr. With a gentle, specific adjustment of the first bone under the skull, Dr. Dickholtz is able to “put the head on straight†and bring the entire spine into balance.
This is a five star book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes sports. A fictional caricature named “Art†drops knowledge throughout the book. “Art†gives the book the look of something for kids, and indeed Art of Motion could be understood by the middle school aged, but don’t be fooled this is fine information for the elite athlete. From a pleasure to read standpoint Art of Motion is a lot of fun. From the standpoint of information useful to the athlete Art of Motion has no peer.
