Description

This is the second edition of the Flight Nurse/Aeromedical Evacuation Technician (FN/AET) Course
Fundamentals of Nursing. This publication represents a major change in the FN/AET course curriculum.
As of 1 October, 1994, the course focuses on care of the patient in flight, with more emphasis on the
critically ill patients one can expect to see in the future aeromedical evacuation environment. The new
curriculum eliminates the extensive review of normal anatomy, physiology, and basic nursing care of
patients which formerly comprised about one third of lecture time in the old curriculum. The student is
now expected to begin the course already possessing a core knowledge of nursing care principles across a
wide spectrum of body systems. Students will be tested on this core of knowledge during the first wee of
flight school and must achieve a score of 705 or higher to pass. If the student does not pass the exam, they
will be given one opportunity to re-test IAW USAFSAM Operating Instructions. Failure to pass the re-test
will result in the student's immediate disenrollment from the course.

Students cannot internalize the new curriculum's material if they do not have a good understanding of the
fundamentals prior to arrival at the school. This hand book provides the student with the core knowledge
deemed necessary by the faculty in the Department of Aerospace Nursing. All test questions have been
formulated directly from the material in this book. Therefore, it is highly encouraged that each flight
school candidate begin studying this handbook as soon as they have been selected to attend the FN/AET
course.
