Description

The seasons are timeless. The feelings that come with the arrival of spring, the calmness of a quiet summer evening, the realization that the days are getting shorter – these are near universal experiences for those of us living in climates where the seasons change. This short volume presents fifteen poems that take us on a journey from bare branches in early spring to the first hints of autumn. I hope you will enjoy the sensuality of these poems: that you will see the colors, hear the sounds, and feel the air change as you move from April to September. For those who don’t have the pleasures of experiencing nature in this way, let these authors help you to imagine.

Godey’s Lady’s Book was one of the most popular American magazines of the nineteenth century. Founded in 1830 and hitting its circulation peak in the 1850s, the Lady’s Book’s subscription list crossed the nation, the continent, and indeed the globe. The poetry Godey’s contained was written by both men and women, and reader-submitted was printed alongside work by professional authors. This volume primarily consists of work by regular Godey’s contributors; few of the names are known today.

The Godey’s Poetry series is made up of 18 volumes based on a variety of themes. In addition to this volume, you might be interested in:

A final volume focuses on the poetry in Hale’s Boston-based Ladies’ Magazine. “Cherishing the Sacred Fire” presents 100 poems from the Ladies’ Magazine (1828-1836), about 45 of which are included in various collections above. This volume has in-depth Introduction that looks at Hale as an editor and her philosophies on poetry.
