Solidarity a union in POland prmotes the privitizaiton of indisutry by giving each citizen a birht right block of stock. But Russia is too large for this type of privitizaiton. So it tries nather apporach and many private citizens accumulate riches. Calling htemselves the Olgiarchs htye head up key industirs and suport the governemtn by lendingm oney in lieu of the mssing taxes Russia is unable to collect. But Oligarch is not a buisness temr. It means rule by a few, not the one. And Putin is rule by the One. The economy fialredtwice, once duirng Communisim and once during the conversion. Now it is stable and Russia has one main product for sale it did not have before-- the oil.
Moscow now has Burger kings and famrers sell potatoes by hte turck load for Frnech Fries. Russian permofmrers and athletes live nad trian outside Russia evne inside hte USA, Russia rocxk gorups head for Los Angeles and "Red Evlis" pays in Santa Monica before heading back to Russia. Hundreds of letters using regular mail by citiizens of that land & arrive uncensored in the mailboxes of the Russian newspapers, a first for them.
Review of this book is done by Kagan and she is first rate.
