“You will thank us later“ That is what my parents told me time and time again trying to do their best in raising me in a time where video games became more and more popular. Although they had no experience with playing video games themselves they thought they knew how to deal with the medium. Unfortunately their intentions in keeping me away from video games to a healthy degree ended in the exact opposite.
Hopefully I didn’t scare you off with this formulation. I love games but equally as much do I hate the feeling of being tied by them, robbed of your power to “just turn it offâ€.
If they got any information on the topic it was some superficial article about how cruel Counter Strike is or maybe one more study on the reason why boys are so much worse in school, guess what it was gaming. I won’t deny that aggressive and socially weak adolescents make up a considerable part of those kind of games audience
The amok debate which started about 8 years ago immediately found its scapegoat. Articles by Dr. X and Prof. Y where all over the newspaper. Even today you can hardly find any kind of text that is moderate and detached, let alone those in my schoolbooks.
Exceptional mass phenomena like the Nintendo Wii or Facebook Games were not capable of bringing more insight to real Games after all. On the one hand little is done to present video game’s qualities to those fed with negative attitudes. On the other hand core gamers dismiss any kind of profound critique. This is where I see a huge lack of insight. I consider this eBook to be capable of fixing widespread delusions about what games truly are.
In this eBook I will convey my experiences and the lessons I have learned from a decade of gaming. I will clarify the types of games which are essentially different. I will talk about the unique pleasure which you can witness. However I am at least equally strong concerned in revealing the downsides.
Lastly I will give my perspective on bringing children in contact with video games in a healthy way.
