Sudoku, originally known as Number Place, is a puzzle game meant for a single person, much like a crossword. It revolves around number-placement using logic. The goal is to fill up a 9 by 9 grid with numbers so that every row, column, and all of the nine 3 by 3 subsections have all the numbers from 1 to 9. Solving the puzzle is based on numbers already put in by the puzzle setter.

Knowing how humans love to come up with all sorts of new things, there have been multiple variations of this original puzzle. There are Sudoku puzzles that can be 4x4 grids with 2x2 regions as well as 5x5 grids with pentomino regions. Other more complicated grids have featured a 6x6 grid with 2x3 regions.

Larger grids are, of course, possible. There has also been a 12x12 grid Dodeka Sudoku with 12 regions of 4x3 squares as featured in The Times. There are also

Number Place Challenger offered by Dell has 16x16 variants and often chooses to mix the puzzle up a bit by using 1 through G rather than 0 through F. Len Loullis introduced Koudus in 2009, a variation of Sudoku that replaced letters A to I instead of number 1 to 9. This puzzle was supposedly a lot harder that the numbers Sudoku since it used letters instead of numbers. This is because our brain is more accustomed to seeing letters that form words than letters that are all over the place.
